“The Bath House”, 2017. This is a set with 3 variants - Day, Dawn, and Evening. Spirited Away is my favorite animated movie of all time, and this set is one of my proudest accomplishments as an artist. After the holidays of 2016 I needed to get the ball rolling again artistically and push past the typical winter blues that sometimes affect us. This is one of those things where I looked back at a sketch from some time ago and finally actually moved it to completion. I can’t tell you how many of those I have that just haven’t yet seen the light of day, brought to completion. Often times a year or so after I complete an illustration, I grow enough as an artist mentally and technically that a piece wears out its welcome and looks outdated. It’s been nearly 2 years since I designed these and even through the passage of time, though there are a few minor things I might change were I to do it again, overall I’m very proud of the finished result, the effort I put into them, and the response they’ve had from the community - all of you! Thank you so much for your feedback and encouragement!
🏯
Spirited Away is such an intriguing and inspiring movie that’s had a profound impact on my life, it was hard to choose a direction for my fan art to do it justice. There’s so many great characters, but the bath house setting itself is also a character. I decided to focus my work on that, using the shin-hanga woodblock movement as my lead stylistic inspiration. One of the beautiful things about those prints was that they could use the same woodblocks with different colors, to create print variants with different times of day.
🏯
My initial sketch deliberately placed the Bath House in a perspective not directly seen in the movie - giving me the chance to inject more originality, but also giving me a lot of design work to do! It was also initially drawn up to be one version, with the fog, until the variations idea popped in my head.
🏯
The perspective drawing took the longest, about a week, much of which was simply debating in my own head how to approach certain things. I took multiple screenshots from the movie, and had my “Art of Spirited Away” book open with multiple bookmarks of different angles. To my surprise structural aspects of the Bath House change and lack continuity across the course of the movie! The literal windows and extensions of the bath house change position or quantity from scene to scene! In the end I went for a middle ground that I thought was aesthetically pleasing.
🏯
Once the drawing was done, the inks took about 12 hours to complete with a lot of patience and a steady hand. And that was after a 4 hour session of messing up and starting over.
🏯
When the inks were complete I simply made slight changes here and there - removing the clouds and painting in new ones for one variation, or painting in No Face and the other spirits crossing the bridge in the night scene, etc. It was a lot of fun to make all those tweaks!
